Different Combat Sports: How to use your body type to your advantage...

Living in a bustling city, like London, there's multitude of opportunities to engage in exciting activities. For those seeking an adrenaline rush and a unique way to stay fit, combat sports provide an exhilarating avenue. In this blog we will explore different types of combat sports, the 'perfect body type' for each combat sport and how you can excel in each sport WITHOUT the 'perfect body type'.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ):

If grappling and ground-based techniques intrigue you, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent choice. Known for its emphasis on leverage and technique, BJJ offers a highly strategic and dynamic form of combat. For Londoners interested in exploring BJJ, the Roger Gracie Academy, located in Kensington, is an exceptional place to begin your journey. With world-class instructors and a welcoming environment, this academy is renowned for its comprehensive training programs.

Perfect Body Type for BJJ:

BJJ was designed for the shorter person to dominate a taller attacker thus most techniques found in BJJ work well with the short limbed fighter. Techniques such as double leg takedowns or hip throws will be a lot easier to execute for someone who is short limbed compared to someone who is long limbed, But the taller long-limbed fighter will have their attributes to beat smaller opponents.

How to be good at BJJ if you are a tall and long-limbed fighter:

For a long-limbed fighter, you will have an advantage with your full guard, half guard or anything to do with your legs. The longer the legs the bigger the guard and the more opportunity to attack within the guard. Use the legs to create distance or close gaps, both in attacking and defending.

Muay Thai:

Muay Thai, also known as "The Art of Eight Limbs," originated in Thailand and is a powerful striking-based combat sport. It combines punches, kicks, knee strikes, and elbow strikes, making it an intense and physically demanding martial art. If you're looking to learn Muay Thai in London, look no further than the Bloodline gym in East London. This reputable gym offers classes suitable for beginners and experienced fighters alike, with experienced trainers who will guide you through the art of Muay Thai.

Perfect body type for Muay Thai:

Muay Thai was designed to suit all body types but a taller fighter often has an advantage. Muay Thai fighters often dominate with round kicks and “Teeps” (Push kick) and thus a taller, long-legged fighter will be able to keep their distance and pick apart an opponent from long range.

How to be good at Muay Thai if you are a short limbed fighter:

For the shorter fighter your game will rely heavily on timing and inside fighting skills. Another key component for a shorter fighter is the clinching aspect of Muay Thai. A shorter fighter could dominate the clinch by understanding body manipulation and technical aspects of the clinch.

Boxing:

With a rich history and a focus on precise punching and footwork, boxing has captivated individuals for centuries. The allure of the sweet science has not diminished in London, where you can find an array of boxing gyms to hone your skills. One such prominent venue is the Peacock Gym in Canning Town. Boasting a legacy of training world-class boxers, this gym offers classes for all levels, from beginners to professionals, ensuring you receive proper instruction while enjoying the spirit of this traditional sport.

Perfect body type for Boxing:

Again, like Muay Thai, boxing is designed to suit all body types. Boxing only allows closed fist strikes, so range will play a big part in controlling the pace and scoring a fight. Short punches such as hooks and uppercuts will only work best within close range fighting, but to get to that range you will have to get past the long straight punches. Thus, the taller longer armed fighter will be at the best advantage here if they understand distance.

How to be good at Boxing if you are a short limbed fighter:

For the shorter fighter, when up against a taller fighter, your game will be best in a mid to short range. This is achieved by taking the taller fighters’ weapons away e.g. the Jab & Cross. With a focus on head movement and fluid like footwork the shorter fighter can shorten distance on their opponent to

Conclusion:

Whether you're looking to learn the art of grappling in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or develop striking prowess in Muay Thai or boxing, there is a combat sport for everyone. The gyms and venues mentioned in this blog are just a starting point for your journey for those living in London, but there are many more excellent options available throughout the city. So, grab your gloves, step into the ring, and discover the incredible world of combat sports in London!
